Successes with Squidoo!!

Update on all my lenses:

What an exciting learning experience the past few days have been. I've learned the following:

how to do a "Link Plexo" - this is where visitors can vote a list (in my case, Most Memorable Movies) up or down or they can add their choices to the list.
how to add an "RSS Feed" to my lens in order to display this blog on my lens.

how to add other lenses to my "Lensroll" - I can showcase this lens on my other lenses

By implementing all of the above, here is the rank all my lenses have attained respectively:
(the smaller number in the first column is the Rank for Movies and TV, the larger number represents the Overall Rank

Shrek the Third 2114Rank on 2/2430425
Fantastic Four 47850Rank on 2/24891937
Spider-Man 771580Rank on 2/242226062
Pirates of the Caribbean 791662Rank on 2/2466225295

I've also added lenses for these upcoming movies:

Ratatouille-starting at837 33959
Live Free or Die Hard 83933961

I've had a failure as well. I could never get a connection to "Technorati" to work. If anyone can explain to me how to get a feed to work between a Squidoo lens and Technorati, please let me know.

Oh, well. Back to more Squidooing. See you later.

Squidoo Crazy!!!

I absolutely love Squidoo! Shrek the Third is now #25 in Movies & TV and #405 out of 90,000+ lenses. Wow! I have been too busy these past few days and have finished three more lenses: Fantastic Four - Rise of the Silver Surfer, Spider-Man 3 and
Pirates of the Caribbean At World's End, all of which are in the Top 100 in Movies & TV.

The important thing is that it has been more fun than a barrel of monkeys. Whether it will be financially rewarding remains to be seen.

I'll keep this short tonite. Gotta get back to Squidooing!

Do You Squidoo???

Allright!!!!! Finally figured out how to get the RSS feed to work. Got that up on My Yahoo. Whew!

Then, someone sends me an email saying you gotta "squidoo". What the devil is a squidoo? So, I follow the link. Sign up for a free account. (They're all free and you can create as many "lenses" (that's what they call a website in squidoo) as you want.

I decided on going for the soon to be released movie "Shrek the Third". It took me about six times as long as any normal 10 year old to figure some of the options out but I guess I got a decent start in about two hours. I looked at the rankings and I was #282 in "Movies" and #8258 overall. Not being satisfied with that, on day 2, I began to add more of that ingredient called content. Lo and behold, the next day I was at #77 in "Movies" and #1598 overall. Not too bad for a couple hours effort, I thought. Another two hours, now I'm #54 and #1026 respectively.

I got some feedback from the recognized authority on Squidoo, Bob the Teacher. His website SquidooSecrets is a must for anyone wanting to join the Squidoo craze. You can get a free membership with loads of tips, hints and downloads or, as I chose to do, you can get a paid membership with lots more goodies. Anyway, I digress. Bob gave me several suggestions which I implemnted right away. A day later, I'm currently at #32 in "Movies" and #638 overall. Wow, I thought. This is great.

I'm going to continue working to improve this lens and I have several more in progress. The new "Spider Man 3", the upcoming "Fantastic Four-Rise of the Silver Surfer", the new Bruce Willis, "Live Free or Die Hard", "Ratatouille" and "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies are all in the works.

I'll close for now but stay tuned for the next progress report along with some results reporting as to how all this is reflected in my website pages and how it all ties together.

Let's Get Started

Well, I've been putting out fires, trying to do some learning and mostly trying to sort out the fog from the information overload I've been experiencing. I intended to get into the whys and wherefores and, indeed, the purpose of my doing this blog earlier but better late than never I suppose. I'm a 70 year old dog trying to learn some new tricks. I am retired and have been looking for some way to add to my financial security in my old age.

About two months ago, a life long friend who shares the same quest as I, sent me some information as to what some college kid, who is a friend of his son, had shown him about a website and Adsense. The kid showed my friend some statements from Adsense about his earnings. They looked pretty good. The kid made it seem very easy to do so I said, "Why not?". So I ordered the same program he had been using called Directory Generator.

Not knowing anything else to do, I picked some keywords out of the air. I chose 'crafts' and 'collectibles' since my wife was into those and I thought she could lend a little expertise in that area. Full speed ahead, I created a number of sites: CraftsMadeEZ4U.com, CollectiblesMadeEZ4U.com and EspressoMadeEZ4U.com. I did one thing right, I believe, I hosted these sites on GoDaddy. Customer support there as been absolutely wonderful, holding my hand each step of the way. (And, BTW, I'm not an affiliate for anything I mention on this blog. I couldn't see how I could be objective about these websites and software otherwise.)

Before I continue with my adventure into the unknown, let me explain my reason for doing this blog. I'm thinking there are others out there in the same boat as I am. Kinda wandering around in this online wilderness with a lot of hopes and dreams but not knowing how to put it all together without going through years of "trial and error" and a lot of expense. I am hopeful that some kind and more experienced souls who might run across this blog would find it in their heart to offer some help to me and those who choose to follow my trials and who want the same answers to their predicaments.

Now, back to the adventure. Subsequent to my ordering the software and creating the websites, I began to get these strange emails. Emails that indicated there could be other things I might need to do and/or to learn in addition to throwing up some websites. Strange things like keyword research and SEO (whatever that was). And, much to my chagrin, they said I needed lots of content as well. Lord o'mercy, this wasn't looking as easy as it had at first sounded. But, determined, I decided to forge ahead. I discovered a site called Keywordtopia which I have found to be a good way to research for keywords. (still haven't learned of a good way to search for those pesky little things called 'niches' though - hint). So I redid the sites using what I thought, at least, were a more comprehensive set of keywords.

Another friend down in southeast Texas had one of these submission programs that submits to just short of a billion sites, so he submitted the collectible site and, about three weeks later, I learned of a site from one of those strange emails called ScrubTheWeb. Here I could validate my html (I am not so proficient at html, they lost me after they got beyond tables. I am creating this blog and do a lot of page editing using HTMLNotepad, a handy little program that you can probably find searching Google), it would analyze and write Meta Tags and has a program called Easy Submitter that I used to submit the craft site. I use MarketLeap Link Popularity to see if I'm making any progress at all. In checking daily, I agonized watching the count creep up. Collectibles in about a month only had a 30 count. In two weeks, crafts sat at 8 for about a week then slowly climbed to the staggering heights of 30 while Collectibles wound its way to 70. From there something really weird happened which I still don't understand. In the past week or so Collectibles dropped back to 30 while Crafts has continued to climb to 291 as of today. Also, Crafts had a Googgle pagerank of 1 for two days then back to zero. (would someone please explain that to me?).

Also, about the same time I stumbled across another program called SEOElite and ordered that. I think it's a magnificient program if I can ever learn to use it correctly. It automates finding sites to exchange links with (I didn't know you needed to do that!), researches your competition by keyword, checks to see who is linking back to you, automatically creates links pages and greatly reduces the time required to email link requests as well as many other features (which I still have to learn).

My latest acquisition is a membership in a program called LinkMetro. For $19.95 a month, this thing saves me a tremendous amount of time. You can go to the members directory and then to the category you choose and with the click of a mouse simultaneously send an email request for a link exchange and add their site to your links page. Also, other members send you emails requesting a link and a mouse click both approves or rejects their request and, if approved, adds their link to your links page. Unbelievable!!! Wouldn't be without it!

Will close for now. Next time, will update you as to progress (or lack thereof) and share some more trials that I've gone thru over the past two weeks. Not the least of which was getting this blog to RSS feed (what the heck is that?) to my Yahoo page. Later.

Why are software tutorials and manuals written for intuitives?

Have you had this experience? You go to the tutorial or manual to learn about your new software application and it seems to be written for a person who is assumed to already know how to run the program. Instructions say to do this, then this and then this. How do I know if I wanted to do that or not? What happens if I do this? What happens if I want to do something else?

Recently, I bought an application and sat down to (hopefully) learn how to use it. Step One says to choose your project from a drop-down menu. So I drop the menu down and am presented with about 7 or 8 choices. How do I know what I should do first? I'm not even sure what most of the choices are meant to accomplish. So I just pick the first one and run it. I stare at the output not having the slightest idea of what I'm looking at. I go back to the manual to see if I can get a clue. No such luck. There is no explanation as to how to interpret the results. What am I supposed to do with this mass of data?

To make matters worse, there are about 6 of these drop-down monsters. Now, I'm in a real sweat. Oh, well, I think I'll just play another game of solitaire.

Can you believe this past week?

Being 69 years of age, I guess I'm not too surprised that I seem to be behind the learning curve when it comes to technology and its applications. I wonder, is there a community out there that seems to fall into this category irrespective of age?

It seems that every time I purchase a new software program that trumpets "You can be up and running in 5 minutes", it invariably takes me two or three days (or longer) to get things rolling correctly. Case in point, I decided to create this blog. The ad said I could be up and running in 5 minutes or less. Well, it took me about 5 minutes to log in, create an account and choose a template. All well so far. Then it took me the next two days to get the page configured the way I wanted.

Just last week, I subscribed to a service that automates the backlink acquisition process. I had no trouble at all signing up for the "basic" program. Every thing looked so good, I decided to upgrade to the "Advanced" version. Needless to say, things started to go awry. I submitted the info to have the company put the scripts on my server. The instructions said they would have it running in 24 hours. It's been 4 days. Nothing. No email saying there have been problems. No nothing. So I go to the website Help Desk to enter a "trouble ticket". I register, again, at the Help Desk with used id and password. When I attempt to login, I gt the message "invalid password". This mystifies me knowing that it was the one I had just registered, but I thought, "Oh, well", and proceeded to click on the little place that says "Forgot Password", enter my user id and waited for the email. It must have taken 30 minutes for the email to arrive with the new password. But, I went ahead and, because I'm a bad typist, I copied the new password assigned to me and pasted it into the login. Again, "invalid password". By now, my hair is beginning to fall out. I email to every address I can find but they all seem to be autoresponders. Next,I go to the forum and post a plea for help there. Two more days pass. The forum post requesting a reply to my email address has been viewed 19 times but no response has been forthcoming.

Does anyone else have days like this? Tell us your experiences so I can empathize. Also, if you have any suggestions (or a rabbits foot for sale) please let us hear those as well.

'Til Later,
JD
